Heritage Documentation for CMDA – 2017
McGANS Ooty School of Architecture is proud to have undertaken a heritage documentation project about Chennai city commissioned to us by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. The project is happening in three stages where we have documented a hundred buildings in the first phase. 33 students and 7 faculty members were involved in this in July 2017 who spent 10 days in Chennai documenting and preparing inventories after physical/visual survey of CMDA´s listed buildings. It was an exciting and rewarding experience for the students and faculty as well to have visited 100 buildings and studied about them through making interviews on and off site, making sketches of the buildings their planning and understanding their construction techniques and materials. The students assessed the buildings finally by synthesising their problems and need for repair and conservation of the heritage structures. We hope to undertake 200 more buildings in the near future as phase two and three of the project. Kudos and thanks to the management.
